Spend enough time reading about link building and you'll hit the same warning: direct "you link me, I link you" swaps look suspicious. Right behind that warning comes the follow-up everyone searches for — the triangle. A links to B, B links to C, C links to A. This post explains what an ABC link exchange is, why people do it, and why the shape of the graph matters much less than people hope.

What an ABC link exchange is

A direct exchange is two sites agreeing to link to each other. Anyone can see the reciprocity by opening both pages, and a search engine can see it by querying its link graph.

An ABC exchange adds a third site to break that obvious loop:

  1. Site A links to site B.
  2. Site B links to site C.
  3. Site C links back to site A.

No two sites link to each other directly, so no pair of pages shows a reciprocal pattern. Each individual link looks one-way — the kind of link you'd get if someone simply decided your content was worth referencing.

Variants exist on the same idea. Four-site chains. Rings of five or more. Multi-party "rounds" run in Slack groups and forums where each participant links to the next person in line. All of them share one goal: add hops so the loop is harder to see.

Why people do it

The motive is simple. Reciprocal linking is one of the oldest link schemes there is, and Google's spam policies call out excessive link exchanges explicitly. So the reasoning goes: if a two-way swap is visible, a three-way swap must be invisible. Everyone gets a link that looks earned, and nobody's pages point at each other.

There's also a practical driver that gets less attention: triangles widen the partner pool. In a direct swap you need someone who wants your link and whose link you want — a clean two-sided match. In a three-way round, three sites can each walk away with a link even when no two of them would have been a good direct match. That's exactly why exchange groups organize multi-party rounds instead of pairwise deals. It moves links faster. Whether it moves them well is another question.

Why the geometry alone doesn't fool anyone

Here's the problem: the triangle hides reciprocity from exactly one observer — a human skimming two pages. It doesn't hide it from a link graph.

Search engines maintain the whole graph, and cycle detection over a directed graph is an undergraduate algorithms problem. A three-node cycle is not meaningfully harder to find than a two-node one. If detection were purely a matter of topology, the ABC pattern would have stopped working years ago.

But topology was never the main signal anyway. What actually gets these schemes flagged:

  • Relevance. A camping gear store linking to a payroll SaaS linking to a recipe blog is a strange subgraph no matter what shape it forms. Real editorial links cluster around topics. Random triangles don't.
  • Pattern scale. One triangle is noise. Fifty sites that repeatedly participate in three-way rounds form a dense, detectable cluster. The footprint is in the repetition, not the shape of any single loop.
  • Placement context. A link dropped into a "partners" page or a footer block reads differently from a link inside a paragraph that genuinely discusses the topic. Schemes optimized for completing loops rarely optimize for where the link sits.

So the geometry is, at best, a weak disguise. The things that make a link look natural — topical fit, editorial context, a human decision behind it — are precisely the things an ABC scheme usually lacks, because the scheme exists to close loops, not to place good links.

What actually keeps you safe

The honest version of link exchanging isn't a cleverer topology. It's a better filter.

A link swap is defensible when three things hold: the two sites are genuinely relevant to each other, the link sits in content where a reader might plausibly click it, and a human on each side looked at the exact page and agreed the link belongs there. The review is the safety mechanism — not the shape of the graph. Two relevant sites linking to each other with real editorial judgment is a much smaller risk than three irrelevant sites arranged in a clever ring.
